On the Hunt

Last week I featured the White-throated sparrow with the gold crowning patches over his eyes. This week, I’m featuring another migrating sparrow, the White-crowned. Undoubtedly the most timid of the three medium sized sparrows that tend to journey through in large flocks, this little creature is quite elegant with the white crown over the top of his head, separated in black from the matching bars of white over his eyes. Each year they winter from Kansas south into deep Mexico and then make the long, spring trek north to nest in Alaska and the northern provinces. In the fall, they again make the long trip back. It undoubtedly takes a lot of energy as they stop frequently to dine on seeds, other vegetation and insects. Yes it may be a long flight, but as you can see here they are always on the hunt.
